Le Roi has a twinkle in his eye as he carefully chooses a bottle from the impressive collection at Judd’s Local. Over notes of black and red cherries, he tells us how he attained his degree in Botany and Geology at the NorthWest University before completing a host of international and local wine courses, including WSET 3 and courses from the Michael Fridjhon Judging academy.

Becoming a sommelier requires intense study, palate training, and ongoing dedication. Similar to winemaking, it’s a long journey. We count ourselves lucky at Icon Villas to call Le Roi our official wine poet.

Port for Portugal, Sherry for Spain

When wine is discussed, naming conventions are often raised as a topic. Portugal claims Port, name and all. The same is true for Sherry (Spain) and Champagne (the Champagne Region in France), but something we did not know is that South African Brandy holds two thirds of all global awards.

We have a long tradition of producing brandy, primarily in the Western Cape, due to our ideal climate for grape growing. When you visit us, be sure to try some potstill brandies, made using the traditional copper pot still, which results in richer, more complex spirits. These brandies are often aged longer than international counterparts, giving them deep, nuanced flavours.

What can guests expect from this wine poet?
As an Icon Villa guest you can choose from different packages ranging from introductory through to intermediate and advanced.

Le Roi’s love for the art of making wine and ‘liquid memories’ as he calls it, is evident. More than a passionate guide, he does not simply recommend wines. He is a storyteller and cultural bridge and sip by sip he will transport you to some of the oldest vineyards in the world, each with its own distinct terroir and winemaking traditions. From the Cabernet of Stellenbosch to Pinot Noir grown in the Hemel en Aarde region, from Swartland Chenin Blanc to Cape Port from Calitzdorp, to name but a few.

He loves to tell the story of each cultivar and to showcase how South African wines differ from and compare to international wines. He even offers a ‘Pick your Poison’ package that is fully customisable, you choose what you would like to learn about and sample. It doesn’t get better than this.

So, what did Therese & Le Roi drink?

Le Roi selected a bottle of Thief in the Night by winemaker Duncan Savage.

As he pulls the cork and brings it to his nose, he explains how this Grenache Noir delights with notes of cherries, bramble, herbs, and subtle spice complemented by a savoury tension and firm chalky tannins.

He describes this wine as an experience akin to a hike in a lush forest, and so, through his deep understanding of terroir, he connects us with the wine in a way that we will never forget.

What to take on a picnic this Summer…

South Africa has over 100,000 hectares of vineyards and produces more than 1,000 different wine labels. The diversity of wines, from fruity Chenin Blancs to complex Pinotage, offers a playground for any wine lover.

Le Roi recommends a Chenin Blanc to compliment your selection of cheeses. Specifically, the Ou Steen from Longridge. Think toasty marmalade, hints of orange blossom, pineapple, lime and honey nougat character on the nose that gives way to a fresh acidity and ends in a long lingering finish - orange peel, grapefruit and cherry vanilla.

Of course you will need a sweet ending, something like the fruit forward Cape Ruby by Boplaas. Surrounded by nature, spoilt for choice in terms of cuisine (Cape Town was voted best food city by Condé Nast Traveller) and with the added thrill of discovering new blends, this moment will stay with you long after your travels have ended.

Women who travel understand that it is about more than the destination, it is also about what we bring to the experience and what we make of it after we have landed back home. Alain de Botton explains this very eloquently in his book ‘The Art of Travel’. He says, “If our lives are dominated by a search for happiness, then perhaps few activities reveal as much about the dynamics of this quest–in all its ardour and paradoxes–than our travels.”

From solo backpackers to travel bloggers, entrepreneurs, and friends, women in travel are breaking boundaries and inspiring others to embark on their own journeys.

At Icon Villas we place incredible value on and care around the groups of women and solo women who book our high-end vacation rentals. It is women’s month in South Africa, and we would like to take the time to honour a few women who have pioneered and influenced travel with their courageous hearts and their spirit of adventure.

Women Leading Travel Businesses

Many successful travel businesses and blogs are run by women who are passionate about sharing their experiences and encouraging others to explore the world. Our own founder Therese Botha being one such person who brings luxury villas in Cape Town within reach of the world. She understands the essence of travel and has a deep love for the travelling heart.

This article would not be complete without the mention Sussi Galley. As founder and Managing Director of Livingstone Safaris she invests heavily in her team’s knowledge, ensuring unforgettable, experiential itineraries that are based on first-hand experiences and a passion for sustainable travel.

Another example is Kate McCulley, known as Adventurous Kate, who has built a successful blog that offers travel advice and inspiration for solo female travellers. She makes it her life’s purpose to inspire and teach women how to travel safely. Influencers and Digital Nomads

Social media has played a crucial role in amplifying the voices of female travellers. Influencers like Kiersten Rich, The Blonde Abroad, have millions of followers who tune in to see her latest adventures and travel tips. These influencers are not only showcasing beautiful destinations but also addressing important issues such as sustainable travel.

Overcoming Challenges & Inspirational Stories

Safety concerns, cultural barriers, and gender biases are some of the hurdles that female travellers may face. However, the community of women travellers is incredibly supportive, for your convenience we list a few resources at the end of this post.

There are plentiful examples of women who have overcome seemingly insurmountable challenges when it comes to exploration and travel. Think of South African Saray Khumalo, who became the first African woman to summit Mount Everest (2019) on her fourth try! Isabella Bird became the first woman to become part of the London's explorers club in 1892. And one of our favourite brave heart female stories must be that of French explorer Jeanne Baret. She refused to let her gender stop her from taking part in a worldwide journey on Louis Antoine de Bougainville's expedition around the world. She pretended to be a man to get onboard the ship and so became the first woman to circumnavigate the world between 1766 and 1769.

A lady who also opened the world of mountain exploring to women was Fanny Bullock Workman. Between 1903 and 1906 she proved that women are most definitely able to climb to the same altitudes as men. No lack of determination and courage here, we wonder what she would have made of our own Table Mountain.

Beverly Joubert is a South African wildlife photographer who, alongside her husband Dereck, has covered predator and animal behaviour resulting in 25 movies, 11 books, six scientific papers, several articles for the National Geographic magazine, as well as eight Emmy Awards nominations, a Peabody- and a World Ecology Award.

There is most definitely an art to travel. From the moment the anticipation starts building, to navigating the unforeseen, to being fully present in the moment. We travel so that we can come back, more whole, more fulfilled.

Types of Whales to Look Out For

Southern Right Whales: These whales are the most frequently spotted during the season. Known for their distinctive callosities (rough patches of skin) on their heads, Southern Right Whales often come very close to shore, offering incredible viewing opportunities.

Humpback Whales: Famous for their acrobatic breaches and complex songs, Humpback Whales migrate along the coast and are often seen during the season. Though they are enormous, humpback whales are not predatory. They filter feed for tiny krill or small pelagic fishes and are totally harmless to people. These whales grow up to 60 feet (18.3 m) long and weigh around 80,000 pounds (36.3 metric tonnes). They live a graceful life and can grow as old as 90 years.

Bryde’s Whales (pronounced “broodus):

Named after a Norwegian, John Bryde, who, in 1912, helped construct the first modern South African whaling factory in the early 1900s, these great whales are over 40 tonnes of sheer awesomeness. They are more elusive and tend to stay further offshore, making them less common to spot.

Best Spots for Whale Watching

Hermanus: Often dubbed the "Whale Capital of the World," Hermanus is one of the best places to see whales. The town boasts a cliff path that offers excellent land-based viewing points. For a closer encounter, boat tours are available.

De Hoop Nature Reserve: This reserve offers stunning coastal trails and vantage points for whale watching. It’s a quieter spot compared to Hermanus, making it ideal for those seeking a more tranquil experience.

False Bay: Located near Cape Town, False Bay is another fantastic location for whale watching. The scenic drive along the coastline provides numerous spots to stop and enjoy the view.

Walker Bay: This area, encompassing Hermanus and Gansbaai, is another prime whale-watching destination. The bay's calm waters are a favourite playground for whales.

Where to Stay

Whale season falls within what we call the Secret Season in Cape Town. This is a time characterised by fewer crowds, cosy wine tastings and lush tranquil landscapes. The daytime weather is mild, ranging between 15°C (59°F) and 20°C (68°F), making it comfortable for outdoor activities. At nighttime the temperatures can drop to between 7°C (45°F) and 12°C (54°F). Still not as cold as most places during Winter. As this is also rainy season here, you can expect occasional showers, but also plenty of clear, crisp days.

The team's favourite whale watching spot is Siever's Point - a cliff path in Hermanus with heavenly views in all directions.

Timing: Early mornings and late afternoons are often the best times for whale watching, as the ocean is usually calmer.
Equipment: Bring binoculars for a closer view and a good camera to capture the moments.
Clothing: Dress in layers, as the weather can change quickly along the coast.

Chef Luke uses thinly sliced gourmet biltong made from game meats like springbok or kudu with salad components such as microgreens, roasted butternut squash, and pickled red onions. This is served drizzled with a balsamic reduction and a touch of honey.

The Neighbourgoods Market. Located at The Old Biscuit Mill, Woodstock. Expect a wide array of gourmet food stalls, fresh produce, artisanal bread, cheeses, live music and more.
The Stellenbosch market, also known as the Root44 Market. Located at Audacia Wines, this market features an extensive array of gourmet food stalls offering everything from traditional South African dishes to international cuisine. It is set amidst vineyards and oak trees, providing a picturesque and relaxed setting.

5. Fusion and Contemporary Cuisine

Cape Town's culinary scene is constantly evolving, with innovative chefs blending traditional flavours with modern techniques to create unique dining experiences.

Must-Try Dish: Bunny Chow – Originally from Durban 9KZN Province), this hollowed-out bread filled with curry has found its way into Cape Town's fusion cuisine. Be sure to also try the deconstructed version by renowned Chef Reuben Riffel. Instead of a loaf, artisan bread rolls baked with herbs are used and the curry, made with premium ingredients, is served separately from the bread bowl, allowing diners to pour the curry into the bread themselves and thereby maintaining the crispiness of the bread.

Of course this is number one on our list. The Secret Season coincides with the arrival of southern right whales along the coast. These magnificent creatures migrate to the South African coast to calve and nurse their young. Towns like Hermanus, Gansbaai, and the False Bay area offer some of the best whale watching in the world. Make use of either land-based or boat-based whale watching opportunities.

Besides whale watching, the winter months bring rich marine life closer to the shore. Cape Town’s waters teem with dolphins, seals, and even great white sharks. This makes it a great time for activities like cage diving, kayaking, and marine safaris.

2. Wine Harvest Season

If you are a wine connoisseur, you would want to tick a visit to a working wine farm off your list. Cape Town and surrounds boast some of the world’s best wine regions, including Stellenbosch, Franschhoek, and Paarl. July and August mark the end of the wine harvest season, offering visitors the chance to partake in wine tastings, vineyard tours, and various harvest festivals.

This is always a wonderful chance for our guests to be amongst the first to taste some of the new wines released and to build their collections and meet the winemakers.

3. Wildflower Season

Number three on our list is the wildflower season. Between August and September, the West Coast National Park, located a short drive from Cape Town, becomes a floral wonderland as wildflowers bloom in a spectacular display. This natural phenomenon attracts nature lovers and photographers from around the world.

Coupled with this, winter is our rainy season, transforming the Cape's landscape into a verdant paradise. The gardens, parks, and nature reserves are at their greenest and most vibrant, offering stunning scenery for hikes and outdoor activities. Be sure to visit the world-famous Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens, a true haven of indigenous flora.

Fun fact: Established in 1913 and covering 528 hectares, the garden is part of the Cape Floral Kingdom, one of the world's six floral kingdoms and the smallest yet most diverse. Kirstenbosch showcases over 7,000 plant species, many of which are rare and endangered.

Not many know about this secret season, and as a result Cape Town and its surrounding areas are much quieter compared to the bustling summer months. Did you know that in 2024 more voters than ever in history will head to the polls. At least 64 countries (a combined population of about 49% of the people in the world) will be partaking in national elections this year.

This week, 29 May, was that day for us, and as I stood in a queue longer than any I’ve ever seen before, I could not help but ponder what makes us humans exercise these rights. What is it that propels us forward to get up in any weather and queue with fellow strangers to stand for the inalienable right to cast a vote, the results of which will have a very real impact on our collective future. As I listened to conversations and opinions of people I will probably never know personally, but with whom I shared this experience, I had a moment where I realized that I was busy imprinting a memory on my heart and brain. A memory that I will cherish and perhaps share with my grandchildren one day. It was late afternoon and the sun shone through the most stunning clouds over Table Mountain. I stepped out of the queue for a second to take a photo.

Of course, I had time to read and research and found that there is even a term for this acute awareness that a moment one is experiencing is in the process of being laid down as a memory. That term is dès vu and it is beautifully described in the dictionary of obscure sorrows by John Koenig. At the end of the day and at the end of one’s life, when all else is stripped away, our memories are what we are. It is what makes us. It is what captures the rich and deep dimensions of experience. It is how we share what we hold dear and how we communicate our values. Life really is a great and total miracle to be met with an open heart and with a resounding yes. It is here for us to experience to the full, to educate, to inform and to fill our memory banks.

D. H. Lawrence said, “The vast marvel is to be alive… The supreme triumph is to be most vividly, most perfectly alive”. Think back on all your life’s travels. Find and hold those moments where time almost stood still for you with the awareness, the inner knowing, that a memory was being made. I hope you can recall many of these bittersweet moments. Bittersweet because we know that they will pass, as we also know that they will continue to exist for us long after, continuing to affirm our joy. A memory of a place visited will forever anchor you to that place and the people you experienced it with.

The value of a memory will not decrease over time
While the value of physical things like cars, houses and jewelry often decreases over time, the value of a memory keeps going up. It is, in fact, invaluable. Consider also that things (again, cars, houses, jewelry) are compared while experiences are shared. When we experience a breathtaking view, a cultural site, or a challenging adventure, it bonds us together. We don’t fall into a paradigm of who has more or better, we fall into what unites us.

Here we are, almost halfway through December and I still find myself thinking we are somewhere in July… how fast this year has flown, and how quickly we have all needed to adjust!

In spite of this spinning sensation, I believe that now more than ever it is vital to take some quiet time out each day, to count our blessings and be grateful for everything we have.

Be. Such an understated, often overlooked word. To be… fully present, in each precious moment.

That is my new year's resolution. Starting today. God’s mercies are new each day, and each day we are given the opportunity to begin again. What could be more promising or powerful than that?

It is said that us Cape Tonians are creatures of habit wherein we find a sensational restaurant and make it our local haunt, or happen across a fabulous smoothie and never trial the vast array that remains on the menu … The Oranjezicht Market is the perfect example. We visited here when it first opened its doors, many moons ago, revealing an organic haven of earth-grown delights, and we never left…

Arriving in the early hours of the morning after a walk along the celebrated Sea Point Promenade, the oceanic view is cast in a golden glow as you sip on a nourishing cold pressed juice. Step from stall to stall as heady aromas fill the air with spicy curries, crispy baked breads and freshly ground coffee. There are some devilishly sinful treats to be had as well.

The day unwinds through a selection of favourite local dishes and artisanal fare, and before long, the bell rings announcing the final sales of the day. With the Zeitz MOCAA & Norval Foundation bursting onto the scene, the two, leading 20th-century South African art museums are creating a serious culture buzz. Here’s a guide on how to cure your cultural curiosity, both indoors and outdoors.

ART CULTURE

ZEITZ MOCAA: V&A Waterfront

“Zeitz MOCAA collects, preserves, researches, and exhibits twenty-first century art from Africa and its Diaspora”

Zeitz Museum of Contemporary Art Africa (Zeitz MOCAA) is a public not-for-profit contemporary art museum that collects, preserves, researches and exhibits 21^st-century art from Africa and its Diaspora; hosts international exhibitions; develops supporting educational and enrichment programmes; encourages intercultural understanding; and guarantees access for all.

More than one hundred galleries, spread over nine floors, are dedicated to a large cutting-edge permanent collection; temporary exhibitions; and Centres for Art Education, Curatorial Excellence, Performative Practice, Photography, the Moving Image, and the Costume Institute.

Not only is the museum a spectacle to see, but it is housed in a historical landmark – the old grain silo. The silos were built in 1921 and the architects were tasked with designing a building that remained true to its old industrial structure. Before you even enter the museum, you find yourself marvelling at this work of art.

The new centre created for research into – and will be a research and exhibition space for – 20th and 21st-century artworks from one of Africa’s most extensive art collections.

Adjacent to Table Mountain National Park, the Norval Foundation offers visitors a multi-sensory experience combining the experience of art with an appreciation for nature in world-class facilities including a sculpture garden, outdoor amphitheatre, purpose built exhibition spaces, and research library, a restaurant and bar, a shop and a children’s playground.

Guided by director Elana Brundyn and her team of expert curators, the Norval Foundation aims to create high quality exhibitions and public programming as the custodians of the Gerard Sekoto Foundation, Edoardo Villa Estate Collection, the Alexis Preller Archive and contemporary art collections.

Theatre is an important part of Cape Town’s culture. There are many theatres from to choose, each with a unique personality, so we have hand-picked three of our favourites to help!

THE FUGARD THEATRE: District Six

Located in historical District Six, you will find The Fugard Theatre. Named after Athol Fugard, South Africa’s most notable playwright, novelist, actor and director, this theatre is as dramatic as its namesake featuring two classic-style theatres and a bioscope. Some of South Africa’s most notable performances are showcased here, usually to sold-out crowds who gather before each show to enjoy the vintage atmosphere, bar and cup of warming coffee.

Alexander Upstairs is an intimate performance space found over a trendy local hotspot, Alexander Bar. Following the wooden staircase upstairs to the intimate theatre, you would never know there was a competitive game of pub quiz going on downstairs. The performances are shorter than most and may be available for only a night to a couple of weeks. Guests enjoy a dynamic range of styles and genres with every from drama and comedy to cabaret, jazz, acoustic sessions, readings and more. Dive head first into this exciting world.

Sun’s out, runners out

Cape Town has a strong outdoor culture with trails rated as one of the top activities. Get outside this winter for a breath of fresh air at Newlands Forest. The trails here offer walkers, runners and joggers a variety of paths from which to choose ranging from easy and flat, to longer, more challenging routes.
