The Admiral
Simon’s Town possesses a quality that’s unique to Cape Town, and often hard to describe. There’s a humble dignity to the place, a curious magnetism that rests along the Cape’s peninsula. An unhurried lifestyle shaped by history, tradition and elegance. Heritage sits comfortably alongside a close-knit community, and a patchwork of architectural styles. From modest bungalows to imposing residences that speak of another era. Weathered hotels, antique stores, souvenir shops, and unassuming cafés lend the streets a sense of continuity. As though time has chosen to linger, throughout the centuries.
In the harbour, vast naval vessels glide through the restless Atlantic waters. Seagulls sweep above the waves, gathering opportunistically along the quays, eager to steal a mouthful of fish ’n’ chips. On the beautiful beaches nearby, families retreat beneath parasols, children clutch melting ice lollies, and the African penguin colonies shuffle along with comic purpose through the shallows. It is a deeply romantic place, held in great esteem, where everyday life carries a subtle air of celebration.
Set high on the fynbos-covered hills of Simon’s Town, The Admiral draws your gaze outwards with its magnificent views. Descending the steps towards the front door, the panorama gradually reveals itself with a breathtaking welcome. The harbour and naval docks below, mountains tumbling towards the sea, and an ever-present expanse of blue stretching in all directions.
The home drifts through its own gentle rhythms revealing its living areas, four beautiful bedrooms, three bathrooms and guest toilet. An open-plan kitchen and dining space, long verandahs and ample outdoor space with the dreamiest infinity swimming pool, are all staggered across the three levels of the property. Comfortably accommodating six adults with the option of two mature children. With this configuration, it’s important to note the children will share a room and a bathroom with one of the other rooms.
The interiors have been thoughtfully reimagined by the owners of the property. Its design narrative guided by local designers and craftsmen, and anchored by the family’s own discerning eye. This sensibility is expressed in all of the carefully chosen pieces. A brass-topped table by James Mudge, a sculptural pendant above the dining area by Greg Marshall, and High Thorn chandeliers that nod to a bit of drama. Japanese-influenced folding wardrobes, along with a restrained palette of natural tones and tactile finishes, are woven seamlessly throughout the home’s spaces. No matter where one settles, whether it be at the dining table, in the relaxed living spaces, the television room with its inviting sleeper sofa. The sheltered reading nooks or the serene bedroom suites, each room carries its own encouragement to pause, reflect and feel inspired.
When you’re not lounging around the pool, or gathered around the tables, reclining on the sofas or Eames chairs, you’ll be out exploring all that this lovely seaside town has to offer. A morning walk alongside the penguins at Boulders, or a quick errand for warm pastries at the nearby bakery. A hike in the mountains or a paddle out sea. Whatever’s on the day’s agenda on the southern reaches of the Cape Peninsula, life unfolds at a gentle pace, shaped by the landscape and the light.
