The Belvedere
This is one of those houses that even Capetonians covet: a handsome, turn-of-the-century mansion on beautiful Belvedere Road, the most sought-after address in well-heeled Oranjezicht.
Anchored on either side by two giant conifers, and centred on the lower slopes of imposing Table Mountain, the house enjoys the most marvellous city views, thanks in part to the Molteno Reservoir it borders. This large, sparkling body of water, the oldest reservoir in Cape Town (1881), in turn neighbours De Waal Park, providing a decadence of space within the city suburb. Top restaurants, the best beaches, Table Mountain cable car, V&A Waterfront – all are between a 5- to 15-minute hop from your front door. But The Belvedere offers so much more than a great location.
From the grand hallway to the plush and cozy library-bar, elegant spaces flow into each other through large square archways that in turn frame every room. A muted palate – almost monochromatic – is offset by tropical green plants and accent cushions. An opulence of objects and wonderful art, collected over many years by the charming owners, combined with flair. It’s luxurious but comfortable, with two inviting lounges, and a deep, furnished terrace that leads to the garden below. A well-equipped kitchen with conservatory-style framed views of Table Mountain. The regal staircase leads you up to a magnificent study and four bedrooms that surround the stairwell.
The two main bedrooms offer spectacular city views and shared access (with the central study) to the balcony; both mains are en-suite, one with additional walk-in cupboard; the other with additional lounge-study; the two Table Mountain-facing rooms share a bathroom.
In the garden the enormous pool holds pride of place, with several nooks to lounge away the day, and an indoor gym.
Historic, sumptuous and quite unique, The Belvedere is one class act.
