Sheiling
Kenilworth carries a modest distinction of Cape Town’s Southern Suburbs. An area shaped by history, established gardens and gracious old homes, where leafy avenues imbibe the romance and rhythm of suburban life.
Serenely settled within this tranquil spot, Shelling Villa stands as a heritage home, that’s been beautifully renovated. Retaining its sense of history, while introducing a more contemporary way of living. An ancient camphor tree presides over the garden, creating a natural focal point around which the life of the house pivots. Lemon and lime trees add their citrus scents, with a little pond adding another calming feature to the landscape.
The interior spaces of the home connect naturally, harnessing a generous flow of open energy, encouraging movement between the living, dining and entertaining areas. There is an apparent ease to the configuration, doors open towards the garden, rooms lead into one another, and the house continually draws the eye outwards, to all the greenery.
The materials that bind the home together play their integral roles with intent. Layers and layers of timber bring warmth and texture, alongside the marble that introduces a cooler, more sculptural note. Beautiful rugs soften the floors, artworks punctuate the walls and curious sculptural pieces add personality. There are unique architectural details throughout, each contributing to the home, ensuring its character is present in every space.
Four bedrooms arrange themselves across the two levels. Providing ample space for everyone to enjoy their own designated reclining retreat. The spacious main ensuite rests upstairs, with a king-size bed opening out onto a balcony overlooking the garden, and a generous dressing room and bathroom. The second bedroom, with its queen-size bed, shares a bathroom with the third bedroom, which has a single bed. The fourth bedroom rests on the ground floor, sharing a bathroom with the upstairs bedrooms. A guest cloakroom sits conveniently beside the staircase.
The entertainment areas are equally appealing. Life spills seamlessly between the interior and outdoor spaces. As we move outside, the house becomes wonderfully expansive and convivial. Plenty of pockets to settle on the lawn with a blanket and a book, shaded by the leafy trees. Tables set for long lunches, and a swimming pool that summons you to its refreshing waters, following a deeply nurturing sauna session. With the old camphor tree being the garden’s great storyteller, throughout the hours of the day. Giving the property a sense of permanence, anchoring its contemporary renovation within the longer history of Kenilworth.
There’s a venerable sense of an old world when staying at Sheiling Villa. A heritage house with a modern intelligence. A garden with its own ecosystem. Interiors that understand the pleasure of beautiful things without allowing them to overwhelm the life within. And beyond the gates, the tranquillity of the Southern Suburban, its familiar streets and the antiquated grace of a neighbourhood that has inevitably evolved, without surrendering its soul.
